Forrester, Crosstrek, Outback... when you think of these iconic Subaru vehicles, you think of sunlit, outdoor adventures. Now, these off-road champions are set to potentially receive a lot more company.
This past week, as reported by AutoGuide, Subaru filed 12 new trademarks with the USPTO. Each patent was filed as an International Class 12 trademark covering “automobiles and structural parts and fittings therefor.” In layman’s terms, they’re all trademarks for vehicles. Not software, not other accessories – but a dozen theoretical, all-new Subaru machines.
The 12 names Subaru has trademarked are as follows: Accomplice, Everguide, Everpass, Getaway, Highroad, Hightrail, Outsider, Tailwind, Trailhead, Trailseeker, Uncharted, and Viewfinder.
What could this mean for the Subaru fleet moving forward? At this point, all we can do is speculate. So, here at New Motors Subaru, we thought we’d do just that.
Welcome to the Jungle
Per their patents, we know these dozen trademarks are potential names for new models, trims, or concept cars. The question now is how many of these vehicles – if any – will actually come to fruition? Often, companies will trademark a plethora of names to give themselves flexibility for the future. So, will Subaru roll out both an Everguide and Everpass? A Trailhead and Trailseeker? Perhaps these pairs will be new trims in service to a particular model. Regardless, there’s some intentional redundancy at play that may be a matter of optionality.
What we do know is that all of these trademarked names share a conceptual link. Their names invoke wilderness, exploration, and outdoor adventuring. You would assume the Getaway and Viewfinder are champing at the bit to explore off-road terrain. Uncharted conjures images of the awe-inspiring jungle vistas from the game series of the same name. And the Outsider... well, that one’s a little on the nose.
If these are in fact potential trim names, it could also indicate that Subaru is willing to supplement or replace its current Wilderness editions, which are currently made for the Crosstrek, Outback, and Forester models.
And then there’s the ultimate wild card: the EV factor. As of now, the Solterra is the only electric vehicle in Subaru’s lineup. But Subaru has announced it will introduce three new electric vehicles to join the Solterra by 2026. Could one – or three – of these trademarks be those vehicles? We’ve yet to see an off-road version of the Solterra, and with competitors doubling down on electrifying their fleets lately, it feels like this could be the opportunity for Subaru to move in on the electric off-road segment.
Joining the Party
Subaru is already a world leader in high-quality off-road crossovers and SUVs. If any of these new trademarks do see the light of day, they’d figure to slot comfortably into this established brand. What unique innovations each will bring to the table is still anyone’s guess.
For the time being, you can go rock crawling or hill climbing in the versatile 2024 Forester. With Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the latest in navigational tech, this SUV is primed to take on all types of weather and terrain. Plus, they’re built to last: 96% of Foresters sold in the last 10 years remain on the road today.
That’s an impressive number... unless you’re the Crosstrek, which endures at a 97% rate over the same period of time. The Crosstrek can credit its longevity to the SUBARU BOXER® engine, as well as its unique, horizontal configuration. This subcompact SUV is geared up for a new adventure, and it can be yours today at New Motors Subaru.
Don’t Wait to Begin Your Subaru Adventure
Plenty of questions remain as to what, if anything, will come out of this batch of trademarks. Could the Tailwind be a performance-focused off-roader? What, exactly, would the Accomplice be accomplice to? And are we going to be doomed to mix up the Highroad and Hightrail for years to come?
All will be answered in due time. Right now, it’s time to seize today; there’s a whole world to explore, and it isn't stopping to await Subaru’s next move. Don’t begin your next great adventure without making a pit stop at New Motors Subaru first. With our Service Center standing by to address all your Subaru maintenance needs, the only limit is your own imagination.
