Determining which SUV suits your driving lifestyle can be best done with test drives. But before we hit the road, let’s size up two of the biggest contenders in the compact crossover SUV category- the 2024 Toyota RAV4 and the new 2025 Subaru Forester.
Key Features and Variants
Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4 comes in all shapes and sizes- gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid- with the hybrid varieties bringing nice value, as they’re priced comparably with Toyota’s all-wheel drive gas models. The RAV4’s versatility extends beyond its hybrid variants, too, with its more economical models, as well as its tough TRD Off-Road and Adventure editions.
Subaru Forester
With a refined interior, a spacious cabin, and top-notch safety specifications, the redesigned Subaru Forester may not seem rugged like the RAV4, but its excellent off-road capability can defy those expectations. And while the Forester is currently lacking in hybrid options, there are plans to bring a hybrid Forester to the North American market as soon as this year.
Performance and Driving Experience
The Toyota RAV4 has multiple options for performance- from its gas-driven 203 hp engine model providing a nice balance of power and efficiency; to the 219 hp RAV4 Hybrid model, whose smooth launch power and low-end torque brings a more responsive and quieter ride than the gas-powered models. Round out the RAV4 choices with the RAV4 Prime’s 302 hp capability to reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, and performance options can seem unlimited.
With the Forester’s 180 hp engine, Subaru takes a different approach to performance, focusing more on functionality over speed. The Forester’s fine-tuned suspension makes the ride smooth and quiet, where its full-time all-wheel drive brings reliable traction to any off-road journey.
Interior and Space
When exploring the roads of Erie and beyond, a spacious interior for passengers and cargo means a very comfortable ride. And the new Subaru Forester brings that comfort and more, with rear passengers enjoying as much as 39.4 inches of legroom. But that extra legroom gets made up for in the cargo area, which only offers 29.6 cubic feet, slightly less than the RAV4.
The Toyota RAV4 is a nice choice for those needing a little extra storage, spanning 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space. But while the RAV4 can seat five comfortably, taller passengers in the rear will enjoy a bit less legroom than in the Forester.
Fuel Economy
Due to the Subaru Forester’s current lack of hybrid options, the Toyota RAV4 really brings the fuel efficiency over the top- with up to 42 miles of electric driving from the RAV4 Prime to 38 mpg combined from the RAV4 Hybrid models. Still, the new Forester manages to achieve an average of 29 mpg combined, which is very respectable fuel efficiency for its class.
Safety and Styling
With the slimmer roof pillars and the seating positioned a bit higher, the new Subaru Forester gains a clearer perspective of its surroundings. Along with its diverse array of driver-assist amenities, it’s no wonder why the Forester is lauded with high safety ratings from both the NHTSA and the IIHS.
But where the thicker roof pillars can undermine its visibility toward the rear, the Toyota RAV4 features essential safety tech and still garners high safety ratings.
